Van Cleef & Arpels’ Poetry of Time

Timepieces

Lady Arpels Heures Florales and Lady Arpels Heures Florales Cerisier

Drawing inspiration from the Swedish botanist Carl Von Linné in which he wrote about a garden plan made up of a variety of plants, whose flowers open and close at specific moments of the day to show the time, Van Cleef & Arpels has taken up this magical idea to bring two brand-new creations into being: the Lady Arpels Heures Florales and Lady Arpels Heures Florales Cerisier watches. Their three-dimensional dial offers a poetic rendition of the passage of time, thanks to the opening and closing of 12 corollas. Telling the time becomes a spectacle, as the flowers blossom and close, renewing the dial’s scenery every 60 minutes.

To bring the dial to life, up to 166 elements are set in motion. With each passing hour, the open flowers close to make way for a new combination. The next day, the sequence of the bouquets that succeed one another from hour to hour will be different.

Lady Arpels Ballerines Enchantées

Originally created in 2013, this year Van Cleef & Arpels reinvents the Lady Arpels Ballerines Enchantées in two new pieces suffused with grace and modernity, one in white and the other in rose gold. The dancer’s graceful silhouette has been revisited, with her posture taking on a slender and dynamic attitude, while her tutu unfurl in new materials and colors. Depicting a dancer part woman and part butterfly, these crea-tions follow in the footsteps of the ballerinas and fairies so dear to the Maison. On demand, the figure indicates the hours and minutes by raising its arms.

Lady Duo de Lions and Lady Duo de Lapins

On the dial of the Lady Duo de Lions watch, in the foreground, a couple of lions is in-tricately sculpted in relief from white and yellow gold, with particular attention to the three-dimensional volume of the silhouettes and their polished coats. At their feet, a surface of diamonds and pink sapphires contrasts with a background of turquoise and onyx marquetry, traversed by round diamonds that suggest the shimmer of water in the sun. Depicted in mirror-polished and guilloché rose gold, the latter emerges from behind clouds of white mother-of-pearl.

The new Lady Duo de Lapins’ sculpture on mother-of- pearl brings to life a pair of rabbits, exchanging tender glances. Around them, a garden of emeralds, tsavorite garnets and pink sapphires is home to vegetation in plique-à-jour enamel. The sun – in guilloché and mirror-polished rose gold – spreads intense reflections, while a cloud in lapis lazuli adds to the tableau’s impression of depth.

Extraordinary Objects
Renowned for its High Jewelry savoir-faire, Van Cleef & Arpels has been prominent in a lesser-known field since its foundation in 1906: objects that create a sense of enchantment and surprise.

Planétarium automaton

Distinguished by its impressive dimensions, the Planétarium automaton presents the Sun and many of the planets of its system visible from the Earth: Mercury, Venus, the Earth – accompanied by its satellite, the Moon –, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

Fontaine aux Oiseaux automaton

Combining on-demand animation and a retrograde time display, Fontaine aux Oiseaux automaton offers a double spectacle. On the side of the base, a feather moves progressively along the time scale. Once it reaches 12 o’clock, it returns to its point of departure to repeat its journey for the next half-day.

Rêveries de Berylline automaton

Some 30 centimeters high, the Rêveries de Berylline automaton presents a flower that blooms to reveal a fine winged creature. A flower born in an imaginary garden animates on demand, opening its petals to unveil a hummingbird ready to take flight.

Staying true to the ambition of the Saxon manufactory to create new, inspiring masterpieces of watchmaking artistry time and again, A. Lange & Söhne presents four exciting launches at this year’s Watches and Wonders.

RICHARD LANGE MINUTE REPEATER – a homage to classic precision watchmaking

Inspired by the tradition of pocket watches, A. Lange & Söhne reflects these historical details in the overall design concept and in the intricate manufacture of the calibres as well. The RICHARD LANGE MINUTE REPEATER, a limited edition of 50, is based on the classic construction principles of precision watchmaking featuring a sophisticated striking mechanism as well as the enamel dial with its steel blue hands and elegant Roman numerals, all manufactured in-house. Contemporary developments include the patented hammer block and the pause elimination feature that prevents the usual pause between the hour and minute strikes in the first 14 minutes of an hour.

ODYSSEUS – sporty elegance in titanium

The ODYSSEUS features a robust titanium case that is water resistant up to 12 bar (120 metres) as well as a matching bracelet, which guarantees the highest levels of comfort even when playing sports. The balance wheel ensures absolute precision by oscillating at 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour (4 hertz) underneath the balance wheel bridge which is embellished with a hand-engraved wave pattern.

GRAND LANGE 1 – refinement of a design classic

As the face of the family for over 25 years, the revamped GRAND LANGE 1 perfectly reflects the ambition to further develop a watch family that has set new standards in precision watchmaking. The GRAND LANGE 1 is the ideal dress watch that combines a genteel understatement with exhilarating design to create a unique timeless piece.

Jacob & Co. Novelties

Six exquisite new launches to watch out for
by Mariam Yasin

MAESTRO WORLDTIME

The Jacob & Co. Astronomia Maestro Worldtime expands the Astronomia universe with an elaborate and rare minute repeater carillon chiming complication and a new Worldtime complication. It is one of the most complex versions of the Astronomia iterations ever created.

At its center, as with all versions of the Astronomia, is the unprecedented Astronomia movement with its vertical construction and four perfectly balanced arms, each attached to a novel rotating satellite. The time display has been moved from being one of the four satellites to the center of the movement. The movement platform rotates every 10 minutes inside the 50mm 18k rose gold and sapphire crystal case while floating above an aventurine base with a hand-painted depiction of the Milky Way galaxy with planets.

This new Maestro also introduces a Worldtime function. It appears as an oversized globe of the earth extended from one of the arms of the Astronomia movement. This globe rotates on an axis every 24 hours, providing an accurate time among time zones throughout the world, while rotating with the platform every 10 minutes inside the dial.

JEAN BUGATTI

With its 46-mm case, the Jean Bugatti is a new design direction and its extremely sophisticated nature is on par with previous achievements by Jacob & Co. Inspired by the gifted designer and engineer Jean Bugatti, this new timepiece brings retro design to a new level thanks to a singularly advanced movement.

Calibre JCFM09 features a pair of one-minute flying tourbillons. A high frequency, double retrograde chronograph with split hands and digital jumping 30-minute counter. Peripheral hands. Smooth pushers coordinated by a column wheel system linked to a separate barrel and regulating organ.

The Jean Bugatti features an elegant dial with extensive rose gold appliques, and the overall appearance of a 1930’s Bugatti roadster grille. This groundbreaking mechanical accomplishment is available with a rose gold case and cream-white dial, or a white gold case with blue dial, both of which are limited to 57 pieces. The Jean Bugatti feels like the dashboard of a collectible Bugatti car with the openings at the bottom of the dial feel like the grille and headlights of a 1930’s coupé from Molsheim.

OPERA GODFATHER MINUTE REPEATER

In the universe of chiming/musical watches at Jacob & Co., the minute repeater came first, in the Palatial collection and in the Twin Turbo and Twin Turbo Furious. Then, the decision was made to add actual music to the watches, and the Opera Collection was introduced. The 49mm Opera timepiece was the first luxury timepiece to combine a high watchmaking triple-axis tourbillon movement with a two-comb, two-cylinder Swiss music box.

The Opera Godfather took the Opera one step farther, introducing the theme music from The Godfather, followed by the Opera Scarface.

With the Opera Godfather Minute Repeater, clients don’t have to choose between chiming out the time and playing music. This new grand complication timepiece combines a minute repeater, which chimes out the hours, quarters of hours, and minutes, with an on-demand two-comb, two-cylinder Swiss music box, playing the iconic theme from The Godfather.
