New Year’s Party Watches

Our top picks for the special eve
By Mariam Yasin

The celebration of the New Year is a time-honored tradition, marked by joyous festivities and a palpable sense of renewal. Amidst the confetti showers and echoes of laughter, there exists a subtle yet significant symbol that transcends mere timekeeping – the watch on your wrist. The right timepiece, adorned with elegance and precision, not only tracks the seconds that usher in the new chapter but becomes an emblem of your readiness to seize the moments that lie ahead.

Cartier – Panthère de Cartier Watches

At Cartier, everything begins with the design. The Maison’s obsession for pure lines, precise shapes and precious details has led to design objects that defy the decades.

This Panthère de Cartier watch features quartz movement, rhodium-finish white gold, diamonds, and a metal bracelet. The Rhodium-finish white gold panther head and case is set with 614 brilliant-cut diamonds totaling 4.41 carats, pear-cut emerald eyes, buff-top onyx nose, black lacquer dial, rhodium-finish steel sword-shaped hands, sapphire crystal, and rhodium-finish white gold bracelet.

The yellow gold Panthère de Cartier watch features quartz movement and a metal bracelet. The stunning 18K yellow gold panther head and case has pear-cut tsavorite eyes, buff-top onyx nose, black lacquer spots with black lacquer dial, steel sword-shaped hands, sapphire crystal and 18K yellow gold bracelet.

Patek Phillipe – Aquanaut Luce “Rainbow” Minute Repeater Haute Joaillerie

The new reference is paved throughout with 130 baguette-cut diamonds (8.66 ct) on the dial and the outer row of the bezel and 779 multicolored baguette-cut sapphires (45.05 ct) forming a rainbow on the inner row of the bezel, the flanks of the case, the minute repeater slide-piece and the rose-gold bracelet.

To add to the radiance of this precious timepiece, Patek Philippe chose the sophisticated technique of “invisible setting” for the dial center, the two rows of gems on the bezel, and the caseband, as well as the central links and the flanks of the bracelet. The dial stands out by its excellent legibility, a quality required of all Patek Philippe watches, even when fully gemset –with 12 multicolored baguette-cut sapphire hour markers, an hour circle composed of baguette-cut diamonds, an hour hand set with three baguette-cut rubies and a minute-hand lit by five baguette-cut blue sapphires. The hole in the cannon carrying the hands is set with a brilliant-cut diamond.

Carl F. Bucherer – Manero Tourbillon Double Peripheral ‘Green Paradise’

The Manero Tourbillon Double Peripheral ‘Green Paradise’ is a one-of-a-kind interpretation of a limited-edition watch in black released earlier in 2023. While it shares the fundamental characteristics of that earlier timepiece, the most obvious difference is its sunray dial finished in a deep, opulent green – deliberately chosen as a hue that resonates culturally throughout the Middle East – paired with a matching green, hand-stitched Louisiana alligator leather strap.

This verdant stage is set for a show-stopping bezel, which contains 40 baguette-cut 3.9-carat tsavorites, sapphires and rubies. On the dial itself are 11 additional baguette-cut tsavorites, sapphires and rubies (each 0.4 carat) that exactly color-match the corresponding gemstone on the bezel. As a ‘Triple Peripheral’, this watch not only features a peripherally mounted automatic winding system and ‘floating’ tourbillon but also features a peripherally mounted minute repeater regulator. This is the beating heart of one of the most astonishing achievements in horology: it controls miniature hammers that strike gongs to represent hours, quarter hours and minutes audibly.

Roger Dubuis – Ladies Velvet Collection

The Velvet collection is where objets d’art belong. Feminine and contemporary aesthetics reign supreme in these meticulous timepieces. With highly graphic dials in relief on two levels, elongated Roman numerals, and symbolic attachments that allow the bracelet to flow naturally from the 36 mm case, the timepieces playfully revisit the Roger Dubuis codes with a new sophistication. With its commitment to maximising reliability, Roger Dubuis has fitted this line with a latest-generation calibre, the RD821 mechanical movement with automatic winding. Decorated with “Côtes de Genève” it comprises 172 beautifully hand-finished components, runs at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations/hour (4 Hz) and has a 48-hour power reserve.

The combination of lavender jade, purple sapphire, and star sapphires creates a captivating symphony of colors and textures; created in 18 Karat white gold.

Van Cleef & Arpels – Fleurette

Drawing its origin from the creative history of Van Cleef & Arpels, the Fleurette collection motif shines with seven round diamonds that form a delicate corolla. It is now reinventing itself in a new marriage between the soft warmth of rose gold and the brilliance of diamonds. Illuminating the hollow of the neckline, as well as the hand and face, the four new creations adorn the silhouette with a timeless elegance.

Illuminating the neckline, the meeting of rose gold and diamonds creates a radiant harmony that gracefully unfolds on a flower pendant. A necklace with five motifs lends its full brilliance to the silhouette.

The new rose gold Fleurette ring features the setting that was redesigned in 2022 for the white gold creations. The widened body of the ring – also known as “cravat” in reference to the shape of its ends – is set with diamonds of decreasing size, giving the illusion of a weightless corolla elegantly accompanying every gesture. The same is true for the earrings that sparkle on either side of the face with the flower they feature.

Pomellato unearths Mother Nature’s most exquisite treasures, which in the hands of its skilled artisans, are transformed into sculptural masterpieces. By Mariam Yasin

Dubai Watch Week 6th edition celebrates yet another year of unrivaled success. The quintessential gathering for watch enthusiasts and industry leaders alike, it stands as a testament to the pinnacle of watchmaking, where global brands converge to unveil stunning novelties that redefine the boundaries of precision and design. Here are some timepieces that stood out from the crowd.

Louis Vuitton – Tambour Fiery Heart Automata

Introducing the first in-house self-winding automaton movement, the Tambour Fiery Heart Automata is a distillation of high-watchmaking savoir-faire, enacted by Louis Vuitton’s specialist movement workshop La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton in Geneva. Louis Vuitton’s next stride in the realm of automaton timepieces continues to explore the theme of blended passion and savoir-faire.

At the push of a button at the 8 o’clock position, the Tambour Fiery Heart Automata blooms under the touch of its wearer, in a lush profusion of dial animations. The flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock provides the rhythmic pulse of the watch, marking out the seconds over the course of its one- minute rotation. At 9 o’clock, a flaming heart, symbol of piety, is emblazoned with the word “SWEET” and crowned with a golden circlet of Louis Vuitton Monogram flowers. A hidden power throbs within the heart, revealed when the pusher at 8 o’clock, set with adamantine gems, is actuated.

Hublot – Classic Fusion Black Magic

Paying homage to Arabian heritage, the two timepieces have been designed with sourced inspiration from a passion for heritage and culture. Both timepieces feature exquisite calligraphy inside their dials, created by the celebrated artist Wissam Shawkat. The colorful calligraphy reads “Al Zaman” and “Al Waqt” – both words meaning time in Arabic – to symbolize the fusion between the timepiece, Arabian culture, and calligraphy.

The Classic Fusion Black Magic Dubai Watch Week sits in a 42-mm case with a matching Hublot black ceramic bezel featuring a unique twist in the dial. Highlighting Arabic calligraphy in rich bright orange, blue, green, and red, the mechanics of the HUB1110 self-winding movement and its 42-hour power reserve mark the time. Encased is Wissam Shawkat’s stunning calligraphy, which weaves its way around the dial, reminiscent of the mesmerizing landscapes of Dubai’s dunes and urban skyline.

For those seeking a touch of opulence, the Classic Fusion Black Magic Diamonds Dubai Watch Week 38-mm elevates the experience with the addition of 36 black brilliant-cut diamonds set on the polished black anodized aluminium bezel. Wissam Shawkat’s calligraphy in this timepiece is a true work of art, with the sparkling diamonds accentuating every curve and stroke, showcasing the perfect synergy between horology and artistic expression.

Jacob & Co – Epic SF24 Tourbillon Arlequino White Gold Baguette

The patented World Time Display of the Epic SF24 Tourbillon Arlequino White Gold Baguette comprises a total of 163 components, allowing it to work at a press of a button, on demand, with exceptional feel and reliability. Inspired by traditional split-flap timetable displays seen on airports and in evergreen cinema classics, every press of the button integrated into the left hand side of the Split-Flap extension turns it to the next city name – and, along with it, also advances the Arabic hour display by one.

The one-minute flying tourbillon of the Epic SF24 Tourbillon Arlequino White Gold Baguette features a delicately decorated cage that encapsulates the balance wheel, hairspring, escape wheel and a number of other crucially important components. This openworked cage not only features an elaborate web-pattern in its architecture, but is only secured from underneath, allowing for an unobstructed and full view at the ultimate refinement of its detailing and operation. It is a constellation of superbly finished components that allows the JCAA03 to keep accurate time throughout its 48-hour power reserve.

Breitling – Avenger B01 CHRONOGRAPH 44 and NIGHT MISSION

The force behind the new Avenger chronograph is the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01 that provides approximately 70 hours of power and comes with a five-year-warranty, as well as being a COSC-certified chronometer. To reveal the movement’s precise mechanics, the chronos are equipped with an open sapphire-crystal caseback.

Core models feature a colored dial (blue, green, black, or sand-colored) and rotating 60-minute bezel in stainless steel. Baton indexes streamline the dial, giving prominence to the red-tipped chrono hand. Note the grip pattern on the crown and bezel, and the new square pushers, designed for the smoothest timekeeping operation.

An even bolder look, the Avenger Night Mission chronograph—with a vibrant yellow or carbon black dial—has a case and bezel constructed entirely of scratch-resistant ceramic. Its caseback, crown, pushers, and buckle, meanwhile, are crafted in solid titanium, providing the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any metal. Dial numerals provide superior legibility, particularly on the black dial, made specially out of resilient carbon fiber.

Bell & Ross – BR-X5 GREEN LUM

Having used Super- LumiNova for the numerals, indices, hands and dial on previous pieces, now Bell & Ross is going even further with the BR-X5 GREEN LUM and its innovative composite material: LM3D. The biggest challenge for this new approach? Bringing together innovation with photoluminescent material and high-end design in the BR-X5 line.

For the structure of this new version of the BR-X5, lightness comes first on the multi-component case, which alternates LM3D and grade 2 micro-blasted black DLC titanium in a multi-layer assembly. Cut from a block of DLC-coated grade 2 titanium, the case housing the mechanism is inserted between two shields made from a photoluminescent composite material, LM3D, made of quartz fibres that diffuse a powerful green luminescence. In the dark, the entire case glows, highlighting the dial’s indications: hours, minutes, seconds, date and power reserve. Beyond its watchmaking function, with this innovation, the new 500-piece limited BR-X5 GREEN LUM series achieves the rank of one-of-a-kind conceptual art object.

Here are our favorite new launches that we can’t wait to get our hands on… and onto our wrists.

Van Cleef & Arpels – Ludo Secret Collection

Introducing two novelties among the High Jewelry watches, the Ludo Secret creations celebrate the timeless elegance of one of Van Cleef & Arpels’ signature pieces: the Ludo bracelet.

Van Cleef & Arpels highlights this iconic collection with a new size of watch and two combinations of materials. Rose gold marries with diamonds or pink sapphires, minutely set in the High Jewelry tradition of excellence. As in the original creation, the watches’ flexible, brick-pattern meshwork recalls a belt. Like a finely woven fabric, the mesh links are carefully assembled by hand, one by one, to deliver optimal articulation and flexibility.

The Maison is also unveiling a unique new creation inspired by the 1941 Ludo Hexagone Macaron secret watch. The dial is hidden behind a motif adorned with Mystery Set emeralds, remarkable for its intense color effect and the complexity of its realization. For its part, the bracelet is composed of a meshwork of yellow-gold hexagons, punctuated with star-set emeralds.

Chopard – L.U.C. Strike One

Limited to 25 pieces in ethical 18-carat white gold, Chopard is deploying its expertise in chiming watches by unveiling its new L.U.C Strike One model. The timepiece chimes the passing of each hour on a Chopard-patented monobloc sapphire in a manner combining incomparably rich acoustics and emotional depth. Equipped with the new L.U.C 96.32-L movement, this refined 40 mm-diameter timepiece in ethical 18-carat white gold is chronometer-certified and bears the Poinçon de Genève quality hallmark. Its solid gold grey-green dial is hand-guilloché with a honeycomb motif. With its crown-integrated pusher, its slender 9.86 mm size and its crystal-clear sound, the L.U.C Strike One model endows the passing of time with an elegantly resonant dimension.

BULGARI – Diva’s Dream Peacock Collection

Divas’ Dream Peacock unveils new masterpieces, showcasing BULGARI’s artistry of marquetry and evoking the most exquisite and precious ancient mosaics: the Divas’ Dream Peacock Feather Marquetry, the Divas’ Dream Peacock Mother-of-Pearl Marquetry, and the remarkable Divas’ Dream Peacock Precious Marquetry with Jumping Hours and Retrograde Minutes, an opulent creation featuring a rose gold dial set with diamonds and inlaid with aventurine and malachite.

Through its expertise in jewelry, artisanal crafts, and horological complications, BULGARI celebrates the innate grandeur of the peacock, an enchanting creature within the brand’s bestiary, illustrating a continuing narrative of elegance and craftsmanship.

Girard-Perregaux – Neo Bridges Aston Martin Edition

Building on their official partnership, Aston Martin and Girard-Perregaux have jointly created a spectacular new timepiece, reimagining ‘the bridge’, one of the oldest mechanical signatures in watchmaking. A new addition to the famous Bridges collection, the Neo Bridges Aston Martin Edition showcases functional components often hidden from view and brings them to the fore. Inspired by Aston Martin’s next generation of sports cars, designers took influence from the world’s first Super Tourer, DB12, with the new watch reflecting the car’s sculpted contours and sharp lines.

Limited to only 250 pieces, The Neo Bridges Aston Martin Edition eschews a conventional dial to reveal its inverted movement, the Calibre GP0840000-2164, a configuration that brings components usually found to the rear of the watch, relocating them to the front. The Neo-shaped bridges support the gear train and balance and the wearer is invited to witness several parts in conversation, working together to impart time. Upholding Girard-Perregaux tradition, the arrangement of movement components confers symmetry, thereby delivering a harmonious appearance.

Breitling – Chronomat South Sea Capsule Collection

Breitling adds a dazzling new trio of color to its Chronomat South Sea Capsule Collection, designed to transport you to a tropical paradise of golden beaches, aquatic depths, vibrant flora and lush greenery. The new watches come in ice blue, green, and pink colorways that include metallic and mother- of-pearl dials, diamond-set hour markers, and multicolored gem-set bezels. Each can be paired with a matching alligator leather strap or Breitling’s distinctive metal rouleaux bracelet.

Underneath their exquisite exteriors, the Chronomat South Sea watches house the Breitling Caliber 10, a COSC-certified self-winding mechanical caliber known for its precision and reliability. With a power reserve of approximately 42 hours, these Swiss-made watches are designed to stand the test of time, much like the memories of a perfect tropical sunset.

The cases – in stainless steel, with bezels in 18 k red or white gold – are elegantly sized at 36 mm, making them a versatile choice for women’s wrists.

MB&F- HM11 Architect

Introducing the MB&F Horological Machine Nº11 Architect. A central flying tourbillon forms the heart of the house, pushing skyward under a double-domed sapphire roof. From this spinning core, four symmetrical volumes reach outwards, creating the four parabolic rooms of the house that is HM11 Architect.

The 90° angle of offset between each room means that you can position HM11 with one of its rooms directly facing you, or with one of the corridors of the house running towards you and rooms obliquely to each side. HM11 Architect is an energy-efficient construction — each 45° clockwise turn is signaled by a tactile click under the fingers, and delivers 72 minutes of power directly to the barrel. After 10 complete rotations, HM11 is at its maximum autonomy of 96 hours.

While the peripheral rooms of HM11 are surrounded by exterior walls of polished grade-5 titanium, the central atrium is open to the light, covered by a double-arched sapphire crystal roof. Underneath, the in-house HM11 engine hums away, its cadence set by the 2.5Hz (18,000 vph) balance of the flying tourbillon. Plates and bridges are coloured with a physical vapour deposition (PVD) process, coming in ozone blue or the warm solar hues of 5N gold, limited to 25 pieces each for the two launch editions of HM11.

HM11 Architect is available in titanium with blue dial plate and titanium with red gold dial plate- both limited to 25 pieces.

Inspired by Nature

Jewelry of captivating beauty
By Mariam Yasin

Nature has been an eternal muse for artists and artisans, and in the realm of high jewelry, its influence has transcended centuries with unwavering grace. From the enchanting intricacies of flora to the captivating beauty of fauna, jewelry maisons have continuously drawn inspiration from the natural world. Even in today’s era of innovation and technology, the tradition of creating exquisite jewelry pieces by hand, using the finest materials like gold and precious gemstones, endures.

Tiffany & Co. – Out of the Blue

Blue Book 2023: Out of the Blue celebrates Jean Schlumberger’s fascination with the ocean and its whimsical creatures. The legendary Tiffany & Co. designer created a multitude of designs inspired by marine life—masterworks that explored both mimesis and abstraction. Capturing the essence of Schlumberger’s creations, Blue Book 2023: Out of the Blue transforms his anthology of aquatic jewels into a mesmerizing high jewelry collection for the first time.

The aesthetic and story behind famed Schlumberger by Tiffany & Co. designs, such as the Royal Fish brooch or La Méduse brooch, is retold through a new lens. With exceedingly rare gemstones set in unexpected combinations alongside legendary diamonds, the undersea narrative that Jean Schlumberger dreamt up over half a century ago is retold again in new high jewelry creations.

Boucheron – Animals

Hedgehog, panda, cat, cicada, doe… The extraordinary story of the Boucheron bestiary began at its workshops in 1866. Their savoir-faire chisels, polishes and paves with such precision that each animal becomes a truer-than-life three-dimensional sculpture. Dangled from an ear, tenderly curled around a wrist or neck, or perched on a finger as if set to take flight, each one appears captured in movement: a beating wing, a fluttering heart all manifested in precious material. Intense eyes of sapphire, emerald or ruby; fur sculpted in gold or flecked with diamonds; shiny, polished bellies; delicate feathers… each piece tells a story.

Boucheron welcomes two new animals to this fabulous bestiary in 2023: the Panda and the Cicada.

Chopard – High Jewelry

To celebrate the occasion of its 150th anniversary, Chopard took on the challenge of signing a High Jewelry collection of 150 unique animal-themed pieces. True to its legendary creativity and boldness, the Maison mobilized all its talent for this birthday collection, drawing on its long experience to mix tradition, advanced techniques and documented research, and taking its taste for excellence and innovation to new heights. The result is an extraordinary collection of beautiful, mysterious and dream-like animals.

Supported by Chopard’s High Jewelry designers, Caroline Scheufele consulted encyclopedias and even the Chinese calendar to design a collection of animals that is original, esthetically pleasing and humorous. Species from every latitude are represented in the form of bracelets, necklaces, brooches, earrings and rings. Though the latest technology was used to create this dazzling collection, as always it was the unrivaled skill of Chopard’s craftsmen that gave the models form and beauty. In doing so, the deeply moving splendor of Nature and the creative genius of Man come together in a marvel of High Jewelry.

David Webb – Kingdom

The quintessential American designer, David Webb founded his business in New York in the 1940s. The Webb brand is famous for bright, bold jewelry creations, particularly whimsical animal jewelry featuring colorful gems and enamel. The first animal bracelet appeared in 1957, unleashing a near-obsession with whatever could fly, crawl, swim or run.

Bold designs have become a signature of David Webb jewelry; alongside his inclination for using a wide range of materials and techniques – such as bright enamel, textured gold, rock crystal, and an array of motifs from the ancient world. David Webb personally had a special affection for nature and living things so the use of nature motifs and images of animals in his designs are prevalent.

The first animal inspired bracelet from David Webb was designed in 1957 – the “Dragon” bracelet was bought by Elizabeth Taylor, and subsequently named the ‘Elizabeth Taylor Makara Bracelet’. David Webb followed this design with enamel animals, among them a Zebra bracelet designed in 1963, which can be found on the brand’s logo – in 18K gold and platinum, decorated with enamel, diamonds, and rubies.

Sara Prentice, creative director, comments “Wings Rising honors the women who inspire our designs: strong, successful, independent women who live and fly by their own Wings.”

Leica ZM 11

Every second is a first
By Mariam Yasin

Engineered by Leica partner Chronode, the Swiss movement developer, the automatic Leica Calibre LA-3001 stands out with the precision of -4/+6 seconds per day and an impressive 60 hours of run time. The ZM 11 is measured in five positions, guaranteeing accuracy at all times, and is adorned with 35 jewels. Encased in a 10 atm water-resistant titanium or stainless steel, 41 mm shell, this Calibre not only paves the way for future innovations in the ZM 11 Collection but also encapsulates the hallmark aesthetics of Leica design.

The watch face of the Leica ZM 11 is more than just a surface – it’s the canvas, where light and shadow create depth. The dual-layered dial of the Launch Edition transforms from a sleek black to vibrant red, depending on the viewer’s perspective. The first watch face of its kind to create the impression of a gradient that is accomplished through fine mechanical craftsmanship, instead of relying on printed visuals. The brushed indexes with polished edges have a luminous filling to ensure high-visibility in any lighting condition. The hands are diamond-cut, softly faceted, and feature a combination of deep brushed and sand-blasted surfaces that reflect beautifully as they catch the light.

The ZM 11 adds three unique timepieces to the Leica Watch Collection with the choice of three band options: The ZM 11 Titanium Launch Edition, limited to 250 watches, with a black and red dial; the ZM 11 Titanium Coffee Black with a warm-black dial; and the ZM 11 Steel Midnight Blue with a blue and black dial.
